With just two months into my time in New York City, I am still adjusting to the city’s fast pace and prevalent stylishness. Transitioning from Texas—and from life as a graduate student—I am rebuilding my working wardrobe, and the Long Tall Sally Cotton Stretch Shirt in polka dot has been the perfect staple piece. The shirt is so comfortable with the perfect degree of stretch, tailored precisely for a tall lady’s physique. The side seams create a fitted, feminine cut, and I can’t believe I’ve found the perfect peek-out-below-my-blazer length sleeves.
While I generally don’t verge too far from the architect’s all black ensemble, I’d been seeking a way to inject some light into these endless New York winter days. The crisp black and white of the shirt offers the perfect canvas to couple with a pop of bright color. The bold size of the polka dots adds a sense of playfulness to any outfit. The shirt can even be partnered with a variety of patterns at larger and smaller scales: there is no limit to the mix-and-match potential. I’ve layered it over pleather pants for a more rock concert-ready look, but the shirt also works perfectly fully buttoned and tucked into a gauzy skirt with tights, or paired with pearls for an afternoon garden party.
Working in design, it is important that even my clothes encourage the freedom to have fun and allow a little funky flair within a more formal context. The Long Tall Sally Cotton Stretch Shirt does just that—I’ll definitely be wearing it all year!
