When I think about khakis, relaxed summer days come to mind. Wherever I actually am, khakis usually take my sensibilities to a place close to the water—hanging out on a deck overlooking the beach. Talking with friends, the cool ocean waves slipping up the sand and soaking my bare feet on a hot day. A vodka tonic is involved. In other words, khakis for me have always been casual. That is, of course, if I can find a decent pair in my size. Usually the pants I’ve been able to buy in my size (40″ waist, 36″ inseam) have lacked a perfect fit, and the quality has been basic. Stuff The Gap is able to mass produce cheaply.
This is why my experience with my new TEAL chinos makes them a stand out. TEAL describes my pants as “Traditional fit, Italian cotton twill dress chinos.” The more dressy aspect of the pants, in my opinion, is what makes them great for tall men looking for something more stylish and exceptional than the run-of-the-mill options from the major brands. While there is still a feeling of relaxation when wearing TEAL chinos, these pants look very classy. I’d be totally comfortable wearing these for a boardroom presentation, or just another day at the office. And the Italian cotton twill fabric is very smooth, far more high-end than anything I’ve found with the usual chino suspects.
Perhaps most important, TEAL actually makes their pants specifically for “long and tall” guys. They have a long rise, and an overall cut that helps them feel ‘right’ and look really good at the same time. The waist sizes on my TEAL pants are definitely on the snug-side, so I’d definitely recommend skipping that extra slice of pizza (or, in my case, that second pint of Ben & Jerry’s Strawberry Shortcake frozen yogurt—God, that stuff is addictive). But on the positive side, the snugness of the fit lends them an exactness that makes me look trimmer than I actually am.
So, in my head I’m still seaside with my vodka tonic, but I’m giving that boardroom presentation nevertheless—and it’s working.
For more details about the TEAL story, be sure to check out our interview with founder Jenni Lallier. And in exciting news, TEAL just launched a new selection of traditional fit colorways—here Ted wears the charcoal “storm”, but you can also nab your chinos in khaki shades, deep blue, or black—they still offer a slim fit option in a warm light gold. Thank you, TEAL, for snazzily outfitting “long and tall” mean everywhere—and outfitting The Height of Style team.
